If you like super delicious treats that will zap your sweet cravings and are actually beneficial to your health than this recipe from Dreena Burton is for you. Each miniature brawnie is rich and loaded with flavour. They are a hit.
One friend was curious how to make them so I wanted to show her. As I added the few ingredients, she asked “where’s the flour, sugar, eggs, butter?” None of those ingredients are in here, plus you don’t have to bake these. All that’s left is outstanding flavour from good quality whole food ingredients. They are superb and ridiculously easy to make. You literally whip it up in the food processor, pat it down in a pan and add whatever toppings you like. It is sweetened with moist, plump, melt-in-your-mouth dates which adds tons of vitmains, minerals (lots of iron and potassium), easily digested carbohydrates and fiber. This is an ideal snack to fuel activity.
I wanted to mention that it tastes different than my Chewy Fruit n’ Nut Morsels, less dense and more chocolatey, yet equally as tasty. I love that these treats because they are miniature and store perfectly in the freezer. They are chewy directly taken from the freezer, which is a plus because no one wants to wait to eat these.

1 cup almonds, raw
¼ cup cashews, raw
½ cup walnuts, raw
2 cups pitted dates, packed
1/3 cup cocoa
2 tsp whole ground vanilla bean
¼ tsp Himalayan sea salt
Topping:
Cherry preserve
Honey
Unsweetened shredded coconut
Cocoa bliss (cocoa butter + cocoa)

1. Process almonds and cashews in food processor until very fine and just starting to look moist.
2. Then add walnuts and dates and process until mixture is quite crumbly, but not sticking together.
3. Now add cocoa powder, vanilla bean and salt and pulse through. Be sure to not over mix so that the nuts release their oils. Pour into 8x8 pan lined with parchment paper.

Note: Dates should be soft, glossy, moist and plump. If they are very wrinkly and on the dry side soak them in water for 2-4 hours. If you don’t have whole ground vanilla bean you can use 1 vanilla bean pod or 2-3 tsp pure vanilla extract.

Whole Food Sneak Peak:
Dates
Dates grow on the date palm, a tree similar to the coconut palm. Dates grow an inch in length and are a rich red to golden brown color while hanging on the tree. They are oblong shaped, sweet and fleshy.
They are an excellent source of fiber; B vitamins niacin, B6, riboflavin, thiamine, and pantothenic acid; and the minerals copper, manganese, potassium, magnesium, iron (about 10 medium dates contain 3 mg) and phosphorus. They are also a good source of folic acid and the trace minerals zinc and selenium. For each ounce; dates provide 260% more potassium than oranges, 64% more potassium than bananas, however they contain about 60% more calories.
Dates are sometimes referred to as “Nature’s fuel.” They are high in glucose, a carbohydrate, that is rapidly converted to glycogen in the liver. Maintaining an adequate glycogen supply in the muscles and the liver is important for sustained energy. Dates are easily digestible and ideal snack to fuel activity.

Laboratory studies reveal that dates are rich in antioxidants and anticancer compounds. It was found to prevent free-radical damage to both fats and protein in a dose-dependent manner – the higher the concentration, the greater the protection.

Be creative with your toppings and design!!
These are an excellent healthy treat to have on hand for you and your kids.
Enjoy!
